Why do I have to pay for ancillary fees separate from paying for tuition?

Tuition is charged to students according to the principles outlined in the University’s Tuition Fee Policy. Ancillary fees are levied to cover the costs of items not normally paid for out of operating or capital revenue (operating and capital grants and tuition fees). These fees vary across programs, courses, year of study, and are often based on student choices.
