Executive Director, Student Housing & Residence Experience

In April, Janice Johnson will be joining both the offices of Spaces & Experiences and the Vice-Provost, Students (OVPS), as Executive Director, Student Housing & Residence Experience.

In this new position, Janice will work closely with Professor Kenneth Corts, Provostial Advisor on Student Residences, to develop and implement a long-term strategy for student residences on the St. George campus.

“I am thrilled to be joining the University of Toronto in this new role,” says Janice.

“This is an exciting and important time for the University as we explore, plan, and build for the future of student housing to support and enhance the student experience at U of T.”

Her most recent post was at Queen’s University where she served as Director, Student Services for the Faculty of Arts and Science beginning in 2022. Known for her collaborative leadership style, Janice has over 20 years of experience in academic services, from student housing and residences to student affairs and enrolment services.

Prior to joining Queen’s, Janice was the Director, Residences Occupancy, Life, and Education at the University of Alberta. She began her student services journey at McGill University where she served in key roles across the University, culminating in Managing Director, Residence Life and Customer Relations for Student Housing and Hospitality Services. In these leadership roles, Janice was integral in strategic planning, occupancy and enrolment management, facilities development, budgeting, restructuring, policy development and governance, program development, evaluation and assessment, and student support and engagement.

She has led student housing operations through the full gamut of challenges, including both housing shortages and periods of low occupancy, the decision to close residence communities due to policy changes and fluctuating student needs, as well as the excitement of developing and opening new residence halls.

In addition to her work supporting students, Janice has served on several community boards and foundations that support youth and young families.

Originally from Montreal, Janice studied at McGill University and Université de Montreal-HEC. In her off-hours, she can usually be found on a back-country hike with her musician partner and energetic teenage son, or on the couch with a good book and a cuddly cat.

“I’m really looking forward to being part of this amazing community and collaborating with U of T students, staff and faculty in defining a long-term vision for student housing,” says Janice.

Janice officially begins her role as Executive Director, Student Housing & Residence Experience, on April 8, 2024.
